Obadiah records the vision concerning Edom, a rumor being heard from the Lord, and an ambassador being sent among the heathen, urging them to arise, and let us rise up against her in battle, declaring, “The “pride,” “zadon” in Hebrew, of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?” though he exalts himself as the eagle, and though he sets his nest among the stars, from there He will bring him down. Obadiah asks how Esau is searched out, how his hidden things are sought up, all the men of his confederacy having brought him even to the border, the men who were at peace with him having deceived him, and prevailed against him, describing how in that day He will destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau, warning of violence against his brother Jacob, shame covering him, and he being cut off forever, since in the day that he stood on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even he was as one of them.
Obadiah rebukes Edom for looking on the day of his brother in the day that he became a stranger, rejoicing over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction, entering into the gate of God’s people in the day of their calamity, and laying hands on their substance in the day of their calamity, standing in the crossway to cut off those of Edom who escaped, and delivering up those of Edom who remained in the day of distress, closing with a promise that the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them, and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau, for the Lord has spoken it, promising also that saviors shall come up on Mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.
Obadiah’s sharp rebuke, the pride of your heart has deceived you, exposes how false security built on seemingly impregnable natural defenses ultimately proves genuinely worthless against determined, appointed judgment.
