Amos pronounces woe to those who are at “ease,” “sha’anan” in Hebrew, in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, who are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came, urging them to pass to Calneh, and see, and from there go to Hamath the great, then go down to Gath of the Philistines, asking whether they are better than these kingdoms, or their border greater than their border.
Amos describes those who put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near, who lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall, who chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David, who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments, but are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
Amos closes with the sobering pronouncement that therefore they shall now go captive with the first who go captive, and the banquet of those who stretched themselves shall be removed, the Lord God having sworn by Himself, that He abhors the excellency of Jacob, and hates his palaces, therefore He will deliver up the city with all that is in it, closing with a description of complete devastation, if ten men remain in one house, they shall die, and their bones shall be burned, since the Lord commands, and He will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts, this pointed warning against luxurious complacency demonstrating that comfortable indifference to others’ suffering carried genuine, serious moral consequence.
Amos’s pointed woe against those at ease, luxuriating on ivory beds while feeling no genuine grief for their nation’s affliction, exposes how comfortable indifference to others’ suffering represents genuine moral failure rather than merely neutral personal enjoyment. His comparison of Israel to other conquered kingdoms, asking whether they are truly better, punctures false confidence built on national pride rather than genuine faithfulness and justice.
