Amos delivers God’s word against the whole family He brought up from the land of Egypt, declaring, “You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities,” asking whether two can walk together, except they be “agreed,” “ya’ad” in Hebrew, whether a lion will roar in the forest, when he has no prey, or a young lion cry out of his den, if he has taken nothing.
Amos asks whether a bird falls in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him, whether a trumpet is blown in the city, and the people not be afraid, whether there shall be evil in a city, and the Lord has not done it, declaring, “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets,” urging that the lion has roared, who will not fear, the Lord God has spoken, who can but prophesy.
Amos urges publishing this in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, urging them to assemble on the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in the midst of it, and the oppressed in the midst of it, describing how they know not to do right, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces, closing with a warning that an adversary shall be round about the land, and shall bring down his strength from him, and his palaces shall be spoiled, describing how as the shepherd takes out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the children of Israel be taken out who dwell in Samaria, closing with a description of the altars of Bethel being cut off, and the horns of the altar falling to the ground.
God’s sobering declaration, you only have I known of all the families of the earth, therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities, reveals that genuine privilege and special relationship bring genuine, greater accountability rather than exemption from consequence. Amos’s rhetorical questions, can two walk together unless agreed, a lion roar without prey, establish that visible consequences always trace back to genuine, underlying causes, nothing happening without real, identifiable reason.
