The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Transgressions” it comes from the Hebrew Word “pesha” which means “transgression, rebellion.”
Amos pronounces judgment against surrounding nations for their cruel, persistent atrocities. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Amos 1.
Amos, among the herdmen of Tekoa, records the words he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and Jeroboam king of Israel, two years before the earthquake, declaring, “The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem,” describing how for three “transgressions,” “pesha” in Hebrew, of Damascus, and for four, He will not turn away its punishment, because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron.
Amos pronounces judgment against Gaza, for they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom, against Tyrus, for they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant, against Edom, for he pursued his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever.
Amos pronounces judgment against the Ammonites, for they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border, describing a fire kindled in the wall of Rabbah, which shall devour its palaces, closing with judgment against Moab, for he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime, this systematic, repeated pattern of judgment against surrounding nations for their genuine, documented cruelty establishing this book’s consistent concern for justice extending genuinely across every nation, not merely Israel alone.
Amos’s repeated formula, for three transgressions and for four, applied systematically to each surrounding nation, communicates that God’s patience, though genuine, has definite limits requiring eventual, decisive accountability. His specific naming of atrocities, ripping open pregnant women and burning bones for lime, refuses to sanitize genuine historical cruelty, insisting such documented brutality carries real, serious moral weight before God.
