God gives Moses regulations for anyone who makes a special vow, “neder” in Hebrew, dedicating themselves or something they own to the Lord. If a person vows themselves specifically, their value is calculated according to a fixed scale based on age and gender, reflecting typical labor capacity, though the poor are permitted to bring whatever they can reasonably afford, assessed personally by the priest rather than held to the same fixed rate.
Similar regulations follow for animals dedicated by vow, houses, and fields. An unclean animal unfit for sacrifice can be redeemed by paying its value plus a fifth, while a clean animal, once vowed, cannot be exchanged or substituted, “it shall be holy.” Fields dedicated to the Lord are valued based on how much seed they require and how many years remain until the next Jubilee, with specific provisions for redeeming family land versus land purchased from someone outside the family, which permanently becomes the Lord’s at the Jubilee if never redeemed.
The chapter, and the whole book, closes by reaffirming the tithe, a tenth of the land’s produce or the herd and flock, belonging to the Lord as holy. Anyone wishing to redeem part of their tithe must add a fifth to its value, and animals are not to be inspected for good or bad before being tithed, nor exchanged once dedicated. Leviticus ends by declaring these “the commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai,” closing out this detailed book of worship and holiness.
Leviticus closes exactly where it belongs, with instructions about giving back to God what already ultimately belongs to Him. From the first chapter’s burnt offering to this final chapter’s tithe, the entire book has traced one consistent thread, that approaching a holy God requires costly, careful, wholehearted devotion, not a casual afterthought.
