God lays out an entire calendar of sacred gatherings for Israel to observe throughout the year. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Leviticus 23.
God establishes His “feasts,” described as holy convocations, “miqra” in Hebrew, meaning assemblies specifically called together. The weekly Sabbath comes first, a day of complete rest every seventh day. Passover follows in the first month, immediately connected to the Feast of Unleavened Bread, seven days of eating bread without leaven, commemorating Israel’s hurried departure from Egypt. The Feast of Firstfruits follows shortly after, presenting the first grain of the harvest to the Lord as a wave offering.
Fifty days later comes the Feast of Weeks, later known as Pentecost, marked by a new grain offering and specific sacrifices, along with a repeated reminder to leave the corners of fields and gleanings for the poor and the stranger. In the seventh month, the Feast of Trumpets calls Israel to a holy convocation marked by trumpet blasts, followed closely by the Day of Atonement, already described in detail back in Leviticus 16, a solemn day of fasting and atonement for the whole nation.
Five days after that comes the Feast of Tabernacles, a joyful, week-long celebration where Israel dwells in temporary booths, remembering how God made their ancestors live in booths when He brought them out of Egypt. This final feast closes out Israel’s sacred calendar with celebration rather than solemnity, a fitting reminder that the same God who required careful atonement also intended real joy and gratitude to mark His people’s relationship with Him.
Israel’s entire year was structured around remembering God’s faithfulness, rest, deliverance, harvest, atonement, and celebration, each built into a recurring rhythm rather than left to chance or convenience. Regularly built-in reminders of God’s goodness, repeated on a dependable schedule, kept His story continually fresh in each new generation’s memory.
