God warns Aaron and his sons to treat Israel’s holy offerings with appropriate reverence, so as not to profane God’s holy name, “chalal” in Hebrew, meaning to defile or treat as common. Any priest who is ceremonially unclean must not eat of the holy things until he is clean again, and specific instructions follow regarding who within a priest’s household may or may not eat this sacred food, generally restricted to the priest’s immediate family and household servants, but not a hired servant or a priest’s daughter married outside the priestly family.
God turns to the animals themselves, requiring that any offering be without blemish, since a blind, broken, maimed, or diseased animal is not acceptable as an offering made by fire to the Lord. Even minor defects disqualify an animal from being offered, though such an imperfect animal could still be given as a freewill offering, just not to fulfill a vow, since vows required the very best.
God repeats the requirement that newborn animals must remain with their mothers for at least seven days before being eligible as an offering, and forbids killing a mother animal and her young on the same day, small details reflecting a consistent thread of compassion woven even into the sacrificial system. God closes by reminding Israel that He is the Lord who brought them out of Egypt to be their God, and that they must keep His commandments carefully, “and I will be hallowed among the children of Israel.”
Requiring the very best, unblemished animals for offerings, and refusing anything less, communicated something important about worship, giving God our leftovers or damaged goods was never acceptable. Genuine devotion offers the best of what we have, not simply whatever happens to be convenient or expendable.
