God gives Moses special instructions specifically for the priests, limiting who they may mourn for publicly, generally restricted to close family members, since priests must remain holy and avoid defiling themselves through contact with the dead in most circumstances. Priests are forbidden certain mourning customs practiced by surrounding nations, such as shaving parts of the head or cutting the flesh, since they must remain holy to their God and not profane His name.
Marriage restrictions follow, forbidding priests from marrying a woman defiled by prostitution, a divorced woman, or a widow in the case of the high priest specifically, since he must marry a virgin from among his own people. A priest’s daughter who becomes a prostitute profanes her father and is to be burned, reflecting how seriously the priestly family’s reputation and holiness were regarded.
God then addresses physical requirements for priestly service, listing various blemishes, “mum” in Hebrew, meaning a defect or flaw, blindness, lameness, a flat nose, or various other conditions, that disqualify a descendant of Aaron from approaching the altar to offer sacrifices, though such a man may still eat of the holy and most holy food, since his priestly lineage remains intact even if he cannot personally serve at the altar in these specific ways.
The higher standards required of priests reflect the weight of representing God directly before the people. Greater access to God’s presence came with greater responsibility to reflect His holiness carefully. Position and privilege, throughout Scripture, consistently carry heightened accountability rather than exemption from it.
