God opens this chapter with a foundational statement that shapes everything following it. “Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.” The Hebrew word for holy is “qadosh,” meaning set apart, sacred. What follows is a remarkable mixture of laws, honoring parents, keeping the Sabbath, avoiding idols, leaving the corners of fields and the gleanings of the harvest for the poor and the stranger, and refusing to steal, deal falsely, or swear falsely by God’s name.
God commands fair treatment of workers, prompt payment of wages, and protection for the vulnerable, forbidding cursing the deaf or placing a stumbling block before the blind. Justice must be pursued without partiality toward either the poor or the great, and God specifically forbids talebearing, hatred toward a brother in one’s heart, or bearing a grudge, commanding instead one of the most quoted verses in the entire Bible. “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.”
Further instructions address honest business practices, just weights and measures, respect for the elderly, and fair treatment of strangers living among Israel, reasoning, “for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.” God forbids various pagan practices, consulting mediums or wizards, and closes by commanding just, honest dealings in every area of daily life, “Just balances, just weights… shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt.”
This chapter weaves together ceremonial law, social justice, and personal ethics as though they were all part of the same single fabric, holiness. Loving your neighbor as yourself sits right alongside instructions about harvest gleanings and honest scales. For Israel, real holiness was never separate from how they treated the people around them.
