The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Life” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nephesh” which means “soul, life, the essential life-force.”
God explains exactly why blood carries such enormous significance throughout all these offerings. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Leviticus 17.
God commands that any animal sacrificed by an Israelite must be brought to the door of the tabernacle and offered there as a peace offering to the Lord, rather than sacrificed casually out in the open field. Anyone who fails to do this, the text explains, is essentially offering to “devils,” and this practice must stop completely, so that Israel no longer follows the idolatrous customs they once practiced.
God then gives the reasoning behind the strict prohibition against eating blood that has appeared repeatedly throughout Leviticus. “The life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.” The Hebrew word for this life or soul is “nephesh,” describing the essential life-force of a living creature. Because blood represents life itself, and because God specifically designated it for atonement, consuming it was strictly forbidden for both native Israelites and any foreigner living among them.
This prohibition extends even to hunted game, requiring that its blood be poured out and covered with earth rather than consumed, since “it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof.” Anyone who violates these blood regulations, whether native-born or a stranger dwelling among Israel, is to be cut off from the people, underscoring just how seriously God regarded this connection between blood and life throughout the entire sacrificial system.
This chapter reveals the theological logic underneath every blood-based offering in Leviticus. Blood represented life itself, and God alone had the authority to designate how that life could be used to make atonement. Every sprinkled altar throughout this book points back to this single, foundational truth.
