God gives Moses and Aaron regulations concerning bodily discharges, using the Hebrew word “zub,” meaning to flow or discharge, which render a person ceremonially unclean, along with anything they touch, sit on, or lie on during that time. Anyone who then touches these items, or the person themselves, must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening, a system designed to limit the spread of uncleanness through careful, consistent contact tracing throughout the community.
Once such a discharge ends, the person waits seven days, washes their clothes, and bathes in running water, becoming clean again. On the eighth day, they bring two turtledoves or young pigeons to the priest, one for a sin offering and one for a burnt offering, so that the priest can make atonement for them before the Lord. Similar regulations address the ordinary emission of seed, requiring washing and a period of uncleanness until evening, and a woman’s regular monthly discharge, requiring a seven-day period of separation with equivalent procedures for anyone who has contact with her during that time.
God explains the underlying purpose at the chapter’s close, that these instructions are meant to separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness, “that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that is among them.” This connects even the most private, ordinary bodily functions directly to the seriousness of God’s dwelling place remaining pure among His people.
These regulations, as clinical as they read today, communicated something important in their original context, that God’s presence dwelling among His people required careful attention even to the most ordinary, unavoidable aspects of human life. Holiness was never confined to special occasions. It touched daily, physical existence as well.
