LEVITICUS 13 ‐ “Discerning the Leprous Disease”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Leprosy” it comes from the Hebrew Word “tsara’ath” which means “a serious skin disease.”

God gives priests a detailed diagnostic process for a disease that could isolate an entire family. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Leviticus 13.

God gives Moses and Aaron extremely detailed instructions for diagnosing “tsara’ath,” a serious skin disease often translated leprosy, when it appears as a rising, scab, or bright spot on someone’s skin. The priest examines the affected area carefully, checking whether hair in the spot has turned white and whether the sore appears deeper than the surrounding skin, signs that would indicate genuine disease requiring the person to be pronounced unclean.

In ambiguous cases, the priest shuts the person up for seven days for observation, then examines them again, and if necessary, shuts them up for another seven days before making a final determination. Detailed criteria follow for boils, burns, scalls affecting the head or beard, and even a condition covering the entire body completely, which, remarkably, is pronounced clean, since the disease has run its full visible course rather than remaining in an active, spreading state.

Anyone confirmed to have this disease must tear their clothes, let their hair go loose, cover their upper lip, and cry, “Unclean, unclean,” living alone outside the camp until they are healed. Instructions also address a similar condition found on clothing or fabric, examined and either washed, burned, or declared clean, depending on whether the affliction spreads or fades.

The requirement for someone with this disease to announce their own uncleanness aloud seems harsh, but it also protected the wider community from unknowingly spreading a serious contagion. Even in a chapter this clinical and detailed, God’s concern for the health and wellbeing of the entire community comes through clearly.
