God gives Moses and Aaron detailed dietary regulations for Israel, specifying which land animals are permitted, those that both part the hoof and chew the cud, like cattle and sheep, while forbidding animals that only do one or the other, such as the camel, the coney, the hare, and notably the swine, “because he cheweth not the cud” though he divides the hoof. The Hebrew word for permitted, clean animals is “tahor,” meaning pure or undefiled.
Regulations follow for water creatures, permitting anything with fins and scales while forbidding anything without them, and detailed lists of unclean birds, including eagles, vultures, and ravens, along with flying insects, though certain locusts and grasshoppers are specifically permitted as food. God also addresses unclean creeping things that swarm upon the earth, and gives instructions for handling contact with the carcasses of unclean animals, requiring washing and a period of uncleanness until evening.
God explains the underlying purpose behind these detailed distinctions. “Ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy… For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.” These dietary laws were never arbitrary. They served as a constant, daily reminder woven into ordinary meals that Israel was set apart, distinct from the surrounding nations, belonging entirely to a holy God.
These dietary laws turned something as ordinary as a daily meal into a continual, tangible reminder of Israel’s set-apart identity. Holiness was never meant to be confined to the tabernacle alone. It was woven into everyday choices, shaping an entire nation’s relationship with God through the simple, repeated rhythm of what they ate.
