God addresses another trespass scenario, someone who deceives a neighbor about goods entrusted to them, or lies about something lost or found, swearing falsely. Such a person must restore what was taken in full, add a fifth to it, and bring a trespass offering to the priest, who makes atonement for them before the Lord. God then gives Moses detailed instructions for the priests regarding the “law,” “torah” in Hebrew, meaning instruction, of the burnt offering, requiring the fire on the altar to be kept burning continually, never allowed to go out, with the priest tending it every single morning.
Instructions follow for the grain offering, specifying that a portion belongs to Aaron’s sons as “a thing most holy,” to be eaten in the holy place, while another portion is burned entirely as a memorial. God also describes the daily offering Aaron and his sons must present morning and evening throughout their generations, a grain offering that is wholly burnt, since a priest’s own offering could not be eaten by him the way an ordinary Israelite’s grain offering might be shared among the priesthood. God then gives the law of the sin offering, specifying that it must be killed in the same place as the burnt offering, before the Lord, since it is most holy. Whatever touches the flesh of this offering becomes holy itself, and any garment splattered with its blood must be washed in a holy place. Earthen vessels used for boiling this offering must be broken, while bronze vessels must be scoured and rinsed thoroughly, reflecting how seriously the holiness of these offerings was to be maintained throughout every step of the process.
The instruction to keep the altar fire burning continually, never allowed to go out, mirrors the same devotion expected in the tabernacle’s lamp. God’s people were called to maintain steady, ongoing faithfulness in worship, not something lit only occasionally when convenient, but tended carefully day after day without interruption.
