LEVITICUS 3 ‐ “The Peace Offering”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Peace offering” it comes from the Hebrew Word “shelem” which means “peace offering, from shalom, wholeness.”

This offering ends in something the others don’t, a shared meal. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Leviticus 3.

God describes the peace offering, “shelem” in Hebrew, related to “shalom,” meaning peace or wholeness. Unlike the burnt offering, this offering could come from either male or female animals without blemish, from the herd or the flock. The offerer lays a hand on the animal’s head and kills it at the door of the tabernacle, and the priests sprinkle the blood around the altar just as with other offerings.

Specific fat portions are burned on the altar, the fat covering the inward parts, the two kidneys, and the fat on them, described as “the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD for a sweet savour.” God gives a permanent statute forbidding Israel from eating fat or blood, “It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood,” since the fat belonged specifically to God and the blood represented the very life of the animal.

Unlike the burnt offering, which was entirely consumed on the altar, the peace offering left significant portions of meat for the priests and the worshiper himself to eat, turning the sacrifice into a shared meal enjoyed in God’s presence. This distinctive feature made the peace offering a picture of fellowship and celebration, not just atonement, a meal shared between God, His priests, and His worshiping people.

The peace offering stands out because it ends in a shared meal rather than complete consumption on the altar. Worship, according to this offering, was never meant to be purely somber. It could also be a genuine celebration of restored fellowship, God and His people literally sharing a table together.
