God gives instructions for the grain offering, called “minchah” in Hebrew, meaning a gift or tribute, made of fine flour mixed with oil and frankincense. The priest burns a memorial portion on the altar, and the remainder belongs to Aaron and his sons as “a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.” This offering could also be prepared baked in an oven, on a griddle, or in a pan, always mixed with oil but never containing leaven or honey, since neither was to be burned on the altar as an offering by fire.
Every grain offering was required to include salt, described as “the salt of the covenant of thy God,” a detail emphasizing permanence and preservation, since salt does not spoil or decay. This connects the offering to the enduring, unbreakable nature of God’s covenant with His people.
God also permits a grain offering of firstfruits, green ears of corn dried by fire, corn beaten out of full ears, mixed with oil and frankincense, treated with the same reverence as the other grain offerings. Though far less costly than a burnt offering of livestock, the grain offering carried its own real weight and holiness, showing that God welcomed worship from the produce of the field just as genuinely as from the flock or herd.
The grain offering reminds us that worship was never only about grand, costly sacrifice. Simple, everyday provisions, flour, oil, and salt, could be presented to God with the same seriousness and holiness as a burnt offering. Ordinary gifts, given with a sincere heart, hold real value in God’s eyes.
