The Lord calls to Moses “out of the tabernacle of the congregation” and begins giving detailed instructions for offerings, starting with the burnt offering. The Hebrew word for this offering is “olah,” meaning “that which goes up,” since the entire animal is burned completely on the altar, none of it kept back for the offerer. Anyone bringing an offering from the herd must bring a male without blemish, laying a hand on its head so that it is accepted for him “to make atonement.”
The worshiper himself kills the animal before the Lord, and the priests sprinkle its blood around the altar, then cut it into pieces, wash the inward parts and legs with water, and burn the whole offering as “a sweet savour unto the LORD.” The chapter then extends the same basic pattern to offerings from the flock, sheep or goats, following the identical procedure of blood sprinkled and the entire animal consumed on the altar.
Finally, provision is made for those who cannot afford a larger animal, allowing turtledoves or young pigeons as a burnt offering instead. The priest handles these smaller offerings similarly, wringing off the head, draining the blood, and burning the bird completely. Every version of this offering, whether costly or modest, is described the same way, “a sweet savour unto the LORD,” showing that the size of the gift mattered far less than the posture of complete surrender it represented.
The burnt offering was entirely consumed, nothing kept back for the person bringing it. That total surrender, whether from someone offering a bull or someone who could only afford a pigeon, pictures something worth remembering, that genuine worship holds nothing back, regardless of how much or how little a person has to give.
