Hosea urges Israel to return to the Lord their God, for they have fallen by their iniquity, urging them to take with them words, and turn to the Lord, saying to Him, “Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our “lips,” “saphah” in Hebrew, promising Asshur shall not save them, they will not ride upon horses, neither will they say any more to the work of their hands, “Ye are our gods,” for in Him the fatherless finds mercy.
Hosea delivers God’s beautiful response, “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon,” describing how those who dwell under his shadow shall return, they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine, its scent being as the wine of Lebanon.
Hosea closes with Ephraim asking what he has to do any more with idols, God declaring He has heard him, and observed him, being like a green fir tree, from Him is his fruit found, closing this entire book with a wise reflection, “Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein,” this beautiful, hopeful conclusion offering genuine restoration and abundant flourishing following such an extended, difficult book chronicling Israel’s persistent unfaithfulness and God’s equally persistent, faithful love.
This entire book’s beautiful closing promise, I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, offers genuine, unconditional restoration flowing entirely from God’s own gracious character rather than anything Israel could ever adequately earn or deserve. Its closing wisdom, that the ways of the Lord are right and the just walk in them while transgressors stumble, provides a fitting, reflective conclusion inviting every reader to genuine, thoughtful consideration of this entire book’s central, enduring message.
