Hosea describes how when He would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria, for they commit falsehood, the thief coming in, and the troop of robbers spoiling outside, describing how they make the king glad with their “wickedness,” “ra’ah” in Hebrew, and the princes with their lies, all of them being adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker.
Hosea declares famously, “Ephraim is a cake not turned,” describing how strangers have devoured his strength, and he does not know it, gray hairs also being here and there upon him, yet he does not know it, and the pride of Israel testifies to his face, yet they do not return to the Lord their God, nor seek Him for all this, describing Ephraim as a silly dove without heart, calling to Egypt, going to Assyria.
Hosea pronounces woe to them, for they have fled from Him, destruction to them, because they have transgressed against Him, though He has redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against Him, and they have not cried to Him with their heart, when they howled upon their beds, they assembled themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against Him, closing with the observation that though He has bound and strengthened their arms, yet they imagine mischief against Him, they return, but not to the most High, they are like a deceitful bow, their princes falling by the sword for the rage of their tongue, this being their derision in the land of Egypt.
Hosea’s memorable image, Ephraim as a cake not turned, burnt on one side while remaining raw on the other, illustrates incomplete, inconsistent devotion that never achieves genuine, thorough transformation throughout an entire life. His comparison of Israel to a silly dove without heart, flying anxiously between Egypt and Assyria rather than trusting God, exposes the genuine folly of seeking security through shifting political alliances rather than settled, consistent faith.
