Hosea urges the priests to hear this, and the house of Israel to hearken, and the house of the king to give ear, for judgment is toward them, since they have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor, describing how the revolters are deeply “sunk,” “amaq” in Hebrew, in wickedness, though He has been a rebuker of them all, their own doings not allowing them to turn to their God, for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the Lord.
Hosea describes how the pride of Israel testifies to his face, therefore Israel and Ephraim shall fall in their iniquity, Judah also falling with them, going with their flocks and their herds to seek the Lord, but they shall not find Him, He has withdrawn Himself from them, describing how they have dealt treacherously against the Lord, for they have begotten strange children, now a month shall devour them with their portions, urging the trumpet be blown in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah, since He will pour out His wrath like water.
Hosea delivers God’s striking declaration, “I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early,” this withdrawal being deliberate and purposeful, designed to bring about genuine repentance rather than mere continued indifference, this chapter’s description of God temporarily withdrawing His presence until genuine acknowledgment and seeking occurs establishing a sobering but ultimately hopeful pattern, that God’s apparent absence often serves the purpose of prompting genuine, wholehearted return.
