The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Knowledge” it comes from the Hebrew Word “da’at” which means “knowledge.”
Hosea confronts Israel’s widespread corruption stemming from genuine spiritual ignorance. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Hosea 4.
Hosea delivers God’s controversy with the inhabitants of the land, since there is no truth, nor mercy, nor “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew, of God in the land, by swearing, lying, killing, stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood touches blood, therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone who dwells in it shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, even the fishes of the sea also being taken away.
Hosea declares that his people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, since because they have rejected knowledge, He will also reject them, that they shall be no priest to Him, seeing they have forgotten the law of their God, He will also forget their children, describing how the more they increased, the more they sinned against Him, therefore He will change their glory into shame, urging Ephraim to know that he is joined to idols, letting him alone.
Hosea describes how their drink is sour, they have committed whoredom continually, their rulers loving shame more, the wind having bound them up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices, closing with a warning that though Israel plays the harlot, let not Judah offend, urging them not to come to Gilgal, neither go up to Bethaven, nor swear, “The LORD liveth,” since Israel slides back as a backsliding heifer, this chapter’s central diagnosis, that genuine spiritual ignorance produces widespread moral corruption, establishing a consistent theme running throughout the entire book.
Hosea’s sobering diagnosis, my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, reveals that widespread moral corruption ultimately stems from genuine spiritual ignorance rather than mere isolated individual failures alone. His observation that increased prosperity actually led to increased sin offers a sobering warning that material blessing, without genuine spiritual grounding, can actually accelerate moral decline rather than naturally producing gratitude and faithfulness.
