HOSEA 3 ‐ “So I Bought Her”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Wine” it comes from the Hebrew Word “yayin” which means “wine.”

Hosea buys back his unfaithful wife, embodying God’s costly, redeeming love. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Hosea 3.

Hosea is instructed again, “Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of “wine,” “yayin” in Hebrew, so he buys her for himself for fifteen pieces of silver, and for a homer of barley, and a half homer of barley.

Hosea describes telling her she shall abide for him many days, she shall not play the harlot, and she shall not be for another man, so will he also be for her, this remarkable act of purchasing back his own unfaithful wife embodying God’s own costly, redeeming love toward His unfaithful people, who had wandered so far from Him.

Hosea explains this act illustrates that the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim, describing how afterward the children of Israel shall return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and shall fear the Lord and His goodness in the latter days, this brief but powerful chapter reinforcing through Hosea’s own costly, personal action the depth of God’s genuine commitment to eventually restore His wayward people.

Hosea’s costly act of literally buying back his own unfaithful wife, paying a genuine price for someone who had already broken their covenant, offers a vivid, embodied picture of redemption’s real cost, love expressed through tangible sacrifice rather than mere sentiment alone. This brief chapter’s promise of eventual restoration, even after such a difficult, extended period without proper worship, demonstrates that genuine repentance and renewed relationship remained possible even after prolonged unfaithfulness.
