Daniel is told that at that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of his people, and there shall be a time of “trouble,” “tsarah” in Hebrew, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time, but at that time his people shall be delivered, everyone who shall be found written in the book, describing how many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Daniel is told that those who are wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever, but he is instructed to shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end, since many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased, Daniel then seeing two others standing, one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side, one asking how long it shall be to the end of these wonders. Daniel hears the man clothed in linen, who was upon the waters of the river, holding up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, swearing that it shall be for a time, times, and a half, and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished, Daniel not understanding, and asking what shall be the end of these things, but being told to go his way, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end, closing with a beautiful, personal promise for Daniel himself, “But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days,” this fitting, hopeful conclusion to Daniel’s remarkable book of visions offering genuine assurance of eventual rest and vindication even amid such extensive, difficult, unfinished prophecy.
This chapter’s remarkable promise of resurrection, some awakening to everlasting life and others to shame, offers one of the Old Testament’s clearest, most explicit statements of bodily resurrection and final judgment awaiting every person eventually. Its tender closing word to Daniel himself, promising simple, personal rest and his own place at the end of days, offers genuine comfort that faithful individuals need not fully understand every detail of unfolding prophecy to trust confidently in their own secure, ultimate destiny.
