Daniel describes a vision he saw at Shushan the palace, in the province of Elam, by the river of Ulai, seeing a ram which had two horns, standing before the river, one horn being higher than the other, pushing westward, northward, and southward, so that no beasts could stand before him, doing according to his will, and becoming “great,” “gadal” in Hebrew, but as he considers, behold, a he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground, having a notable horn between his eyes. Daniel describes this he goat coming to the ram, moved with anger against him, smiting the ram, and breaking his two horns, casting him to the ground, and stamping upon him, growing very great, but when he was strong, the great horn was broken, and instead came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven, and out of one of them came forth a little horn, which grew exceedingly great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land, waxing great even to the host of heaven, casting down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamping upon them, even magnifying himself to the prince of the host, taking away the daily sacrifice, and casting down the place of His sanctuary. Daniel hears a holy one speaking, asking how long the vision concerning the daily sacrifice shall last, being told two thousand three hundred days, then the sanctuary shall be cleansed, Gabriel then coming near to Daniel, telling him to understand that the vision belongs to the time of the end, explaining that the ram is the kings of Media and Persia, the rough goat is the king of Grecia, and the great horn is its first king, describing how in the latter time of their kingdom, a king of fierce countenance shall stand up, understanding dark sentences, his power becoming mighty, but not by his own power, closing with Daniel fainting, being sick certain days afterward, astonished at the vision, since none understood it, this chapter’s detailed geopolitical prophecy demonstrating remarkable, verifiable historical accuracy in its description of successive ancient empires.
Daniel’s detailed vision of the ram and goat, later confirmed by history as remarkably accurate descriptions of the Medo-Persian and Greek empires, demonstrates prophecy’s genuine capacity for specific, verifiable historical detail rather than merely vague, generalized prediction.
