Daniel records how it pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred twenty princes, and three presidents, of whom Daniel was first, since an excellent “spirit,” “ruach” in Hebrew, was in him, so the king thought to set him over the whole realm, but the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom, yet could find no error or fault, since he was faithful, so they conclude they shall not find occasion against him except concerning the law of his God. Daniel’s enemies persuade the king to sign a decree that whoever asks a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of the king, shall be cast into the den of lions, but Daniel, knowing the decree is signed, goes into his house, and his windows being open toward Jerusalem, kneels upon his knees three times a day, and prays, and gives thanks before his God, just as he did before, so his enemies find him praying, and accuse him before the king, who is much displeased with himself, and sets his heart on Daniel to deliver him, laboring till the going down of the sun to save him, but the law of the Medes and Persians cannot be changed. Daniel is cast into the den of lions, the king telling him, “Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee,” and the king, after a sleepless night of fasting, comes early to the den, crying with a lamentable voice, asking whether his God has been able to deliver him from the lions, Daniel responding, “My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me,” so the king is exceedingly glad, and commands Daniel taken up out of the den, no manner of hurt being found upon him, because he believed in his God, the king then commanding those who accused Daniel be cast into the den themselves, closing with Darius issuing a decree that all people should tremble and fear before the God of Daniel, since He is the living God, and steadfast forever.
Daniel’s consistent practice of prayer, continuing exactly as before even knowing it would provoke a deadly decree, demonstrates genuine, unwavering conviction that refuses to alter faithful habit merely because circumstances have become genuinely dangerous. His remarkable survival among hungry lions, protected specifically because innocency was found in him, offers powerful testimony that God’s protection genuinely extends to those who maintain integrity even under intense, life-threatening pressure.
