Daniel records Nebuchadnezzar’s own testimony, describing another dream that troubled him, a tree in the midst of the earth, whose height was great, growing and becoming strong, its “height,” “rum” in Aramaic, reaching to heaven, and it being visible to the end of all the earth, its leaves being fair, and its fruit much, providing food for all, beasts of the field finding shadow under it, and the fowls of heaven dwelling in its boughs. Daniel describes a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, crying aloud, commanding the tree to be cut down, but its stump left in the earth, wetted with the dew of heaven, letting his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given to him, Daniel, deeply troubled, interpreting this as concerning the king himself, that he shall be driven from men, and his dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, eating grass as oxen, and being wet with the dew of heaven, until he knows that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, urging the king to break off his sins by righteousness, that there might be a lengthening of his tranquility. Daniel describes how twelve months later, as the king walks in his palace, boasting of the great Babylon he has built, a voice from heaven declares this very judgment upon him, and immediately he is driven from men, eating grass as oxen, his body wet with the dew of heaven, until his hairs grew like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws, but at the end of the days, Nebuchadnezzar lifts up his eyes to heaven, and his understanding returns to him, and he blesses the Most High, praising Him who lives forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, closing with the king’s own testimony, “Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.”
Nebuchadnezzar’s remarkable humbling, from proud boasting to genuine madness eating grass like an animal, illustrates how thoroughly God can dismantle even the most impressive human pride when it refuses to acknowledge its genuine dependence on Him. This chapter’s happy ending, the king’s own written testimony praising the King of heaven after his restoration, offers real hope that even the most stubborn pride can eventually give way to authentic, humbled recognition of God’s rightful sovereignty.
