Three faithful men refuse to bow before a golden image, facing a furnace of blazing fire. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Daniel 3.
Daniel records how Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, its height being sixty cubits, and its width six cubits, setting it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon, gathering together the princes, governors, and captains for the dedication, a herald crying that at the sound of the “music,” “zemer” in Aramaic, all peoples, nations, and languages should fall down and worship this golden image, whoever did not falling down and worshiping being cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Daniel describes how certain Chaldeans accuse certain Jews, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, of not serving the king’s gods, nor worshiping the golden image he has set up, so Nebuchadnezzar, in rage and fury, commands they be brought before him, giving them one more chance, but they answer him, “We are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” Daniel describes how the king, full of fury, commands the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated, and the men who cast Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are themselves killed by the flame’s intensity, but the three men fall down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace, yet the king, astonished, rises up in haste, asking his counselors whether they did not cast three men bound into the fire, seeing four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, unhurt, and the form of the fourth being like the Son of God, calling them to come forth, and finding upon them no hurt, nor was a hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire having passed on them, Nebuchadnezzar then blessing their God, and making a decree that no one should speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
The three men’s declaration, our God is able to deliver us, but even if He does not, we will still not worship your image, offers one of Scripture’s most remarkable statements of faith unconditioned on guaranteed rescue, genuine trust that would remain steadfast regardless of the actual outcome. Their walking unharmed within the furnace, accompanied by a mysterious fourth figure, demonstrates that God’s presence can genuinely accompany His people even into the very midst of their most severe, seemingly inescapable trials.
