Daniel records how in the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and besieged it, the Lord giving Jehoiakim into his hand, along with part of the vessels of the house of God, the king speaking to bring certain children of Israel, of the king’s seed, and of the princes, children in whom was no blemish, well favored, skillful in all wisdom, cunning in “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew, and understanding science. Daniel describes how the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank, teaching them the learning and tongue of the Chaldeans, among whom were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, the prince of the eunuchs giving them new names, Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, but Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank, therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Daniel proposes a ten-day test, that they be given pulse to eat, and water to drink, and at the end of ten days their countenances would be compared with the children who ate the king’s meat, so the test is conducted, and at the end of ten days their countenances appear fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children who ate the king’s meat, so the steward takes away their meat and wine, and gives them pulse, describing how God gave these four children knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams, closing with the observation that in all matters of wisdom and understanding the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers in his realm, and Daniel continued there until the first year of King Cyrus.
Daniel’s resolute decision not to defile himself with the king’s food, even while facing genuine pressure to conform within a foreign, dominant culture, models courageous conviction maintained through respectful, thoughtful negotiation rather than defiant confrontation. This chapter’s outcome, God granting these faithful young men wisdom exceeding all the king’s other advisors, demonstrates that genuine faithfulness, even in seemingly small matters, ultimately produces real, observable excellence rather than disadvantage.
