Ezekiel witnesses God’s glory dramatically returning to fill this magnificent new temple. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 43.
Ezekiel describes being brought to the gate, the gate that looks toward the east, and behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east, His voice being like the noise of many waters, and the earth shined with His “glory,” “kavod” in Hebrew, this vision being like the vision he saw when He came to destroy the city, and like the vision he saw by the river Chebar, and he fell upon his face.
Ezekiel describes the glory of the Lord coming into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east, the spirit taking him up, and bringing him into the inner court, and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house, describing how he heard Him speaking to him out of the house, telling him this is the place of His throne, and the place of the soles of His feet, where He will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel forever, and the house of Israel shall no more defile His holy name.
Ezekiel is instructed to show the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities, and let them measure the pattern, and if they are ashamed of all they have done, let them know the form of the house, its fashion, its goings out, its comings in, and all its forms, and all its ordinances, and all its forms, and all its laws, describing detailed instructions concerning the altar and its dimensions, and the ordinances for its dedication with sacrifices, this dramatic return of God’s glory to fill the temple providing a powerful, hopeful counterpoint to its earlier, sorrowful departure witnessed in chapter ten.
This chapter’s dramatic return of God’s glory, filling the very temple that had witnessed its sorrowful, gradual departure many chapters earlier, offers powerful confirmation that genuine, complete restoration remained God’s ultimate purpose despite such extensive intervening judgment. His declaration that this shall be the place of His throne forever emphasizes that this restoration, unlike the previous, ultimately compromised arrangement, would finally involve genuine, lasting, uninterrupted divine presence.
