Ezekiel witnesses one of Scripture’s most famous visions, dead bones brought back to life. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 37.
Ezekiel describes the hand of the Lord being upon him, and carrying him out in the spirit of the Lord, and setting him down in the midst of the valley, which was full of “bones,” “etsem” in Hebrew, causing him to pass by them round about, and behold, there were very many in the open valley, and they were very dry, asking him whether these bones can live, Ezekiel responding, “O Lord GOD, thou knowest.”
Ezekiel is instructed to prophesy upon these bones, saying to them, “O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD… Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live,” so he prophesies as commanded, and there is a noise, and behold, a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone, and the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above, but there was no breath in them.
Ezekiel is instructed to prophesy to the wind, to come from the four winds, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live, so he prophesies as commanded, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army, God explaining these bones are the whole house of Israel, who say their bones are dried, and their hope is lost, they are cut off for their parts, but He promises to open their graves, and cause them to come up out of their graves, and bring them into the land of Israel, putting His spirit in them, and they shall live, and He shall place them in their own land, closing with a further sign, two sticks joined into one, representing the reuniting of Judah and Israel under one king, His servant David, forever, in an everlasting covenant of peace.
This chapter’s famous vision, an entire valley of dry, hopeless bones reassembled and breathed into life, offers Scripture’s most vivid, memorable picture of genuine resurrection hope for a nation that felt utterly, completely dead. Its accompanying sign, two separate sticks joined into one, extends this hope toward genuine, lasting reunification between Israel and Judah, previously divided kingdoms restored together under one everlasting covenant of peace.
