Ezekiel is instructed to take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, comparing him to a young lion of the nations, yet he is as a “whale,” “tannin” in Hebrew, in the seas, he came forth with his rivers, and troubled the waters with his feet, and fouled their rivers, describing how God will spread His net over him with a company of many people, and they shall bring him up in His net.
Ezekiel describes how He will leave him upon the land, He will cast him forth upon the open field, and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon him, and He will fill the beasts of the whole earth with him, describing how He will lay his flesh upon the mountains, and fill the valleys with his height, watering with his blood the land, even to the mountains, and the rivers shall be full of him, describing how when He shall put him out, He will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark, He will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
Ezekiel describes Egypt going down to the pit, joining the company of other fallen nations already there, Asshur and all her company, Elam and all her multitude, Meshech, Tubal, and Edom, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who caused their terror in the land of the living, yet now bearing their shame with those who go down to the pit, closing with the observation that Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, since He has set his terror in the land of the living, yet he shall lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with those slain by the sword, this final, extended lament against Egypt closing this entire extended section of Ezekiel’s oracles against the surrounding nations with sobering, comprehensive imagery of death and the grave.
This final lament’s stark image, Egypt joining an entire company of previously fallen nations already lying in the pit together, illustrates death’s genuine, universal power to level even history’s mightiest empires into shared, common humiliation. This chapter’s closing this extensive section of oracles against foreign nations reminds readers that God’s moral accountability genuinely extended across every ancient Near Eastern power, not merely Judah’s own immediate circumstances alone.
