Ezekiel continues his prophecy against Egypt, describing a coming day of widespread devastation. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 30.
Ezekiel is instructed to prophesy and say, “Thus saith the Lord GOD; Howl ye, Woe worth the day! For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen,” describing how a sword shall come upon Egypt, and great pain shall be in Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall in Egypt, and they shall take away her “multitude,” “hamon” in Hebrew, and her foundations shall be broken down.
Ezekiel describes how Ethiopia, Libya, and Lydia, and all the mingled people, and Chub, and the men of the land who are in league, shall fall with them by the sword, describing how the pride of her power shall come down, from the tower of Syene shall they fall in it by the sword, and they shall know that He is the Lord, when He has set a fire in Egypt, and when all her helpers shall be destroyed, describing how the cities shall be wasted, and the yoke of Egypt broken, and all her helpers shall be broken.
Ezekiel describes how He will break the arms of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and behold, it shall not be bound up to be healed, to put a roller to bind it, to make it strong to hold the sword, describing how He will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them among the countries, closing with a description of Him breaking Pharaoh’s arms, one already broken, and He will cause the sword to fall out of his hand, describing how He will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put His sword in his hand, but He will break Pharaoh’s arms, and he shall groan before him with the groanings of a deadly wounded man, this extensive oracle continuing to describe Egypt’s coming, comprehensive downfall through the specific instrument of the Babylonian king.
This chapter’s extensive listing of Egypt’s allied nations, all falling together by the same sword, demonstrates how political alliances built on shared vulnerability rather than genuine strength ultimately provide no real, lasting protection against determined judgment. Its vivid image of Pharaoh’s broken, unhealed arm illustrates power’s genuine fragility once God’s sovereign purposes turn decisively against even the most seemingly established, entrenched ruler.
