Ezekiel is instructed to take up a lamentation for Tyrus, describing her as situated at the entry of the sea, a merchant of the people for many isles, her builders having perfected her beauty, they have made all her ship boards of fir trees of Senir, they have taken cedars from Lebanon to make masts for her, of the oaks of Bashan have they made her oars, the company of the “Ashurites,” “Ashurim” in Hebrew, have made her benches of ivory, brought out of the isles of Chittim. Ezekiel describes Tyre’s extensive trading network in remarkable detail, fine linen with broidered work from Egypt, blue and purple from the isles of Elishah, Tarshish trading with her in silver, iron, tin, and lead, Javan, Tubal, and Meshech trading the persons of men and vessels of brass, Judah and the land of Israel trading wheat, honey, oil, and balm, Damascus trading wine and white wool, describing an extensive list of nations and their various goods, all coming to Tyre’s markets, this remarkable, detailed catalog demonstrating just how extensive and prosperous Tyre’s trading empire had genuinely become. Ezekiel describes Tyre’s sudden, devastating downfall, the mariners and all the pilots of the sea, they shall come down from their ships, they shall stand upon the land, and cause their voice to be heard against her, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes, and make themselves bald for her, and gird themselves with sackcloth, closing with their lamentation, “What city is like Tyrus, like the destroyed in the midst of the sea?… they that occupy in thy merchandise shall hiss at thee; thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt be any more,” this extended, detailed lament capturing both the genuine magnificence of Tyre’s former glory and the completeness of her eventual, devastating destruction.
