Ezekiel is instructed to set his face toward Jerusalem, and drop his word toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel, telling the land of Israel that He is against them, and will draw forth His “sword,” “chereb” in Hebrew, out of its sheath, and will cut off from them the righteous and the wicked, since His sword shall go forth from its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north. Ezekiel is instructed to sigh with a breaking of his loins, and with bitterness, sighing before their eyes, and when they ask why he sighs, he shall answer, for the tidings, because it comes, and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water, behold it comes, and shall be brought to pass, describing the sword being sharpened, and also furbished, sharpened to make a sore slaughter, furbished that it may glitter, urging them to cry and howl, son of man, for it shall be upon His people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel, terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon His people. Ezekiel describes a specific, dramatic sign, the king of Babylon standing at the parting of the way, at the head of two ways, to use divination, he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver, at his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, describing this as their own iniquity being brought to remembrance, since they shall be taken with the hand, closing with a final oracle against the Ammonites, whose reproach shall also not be forgotten, since the sword shall come upon them too, this dramatic chapter powerfully conveying judgment’s genuine, unavoidable approach through vivid poetic imagery of a sharpened, glittering sword.
Ezekiel’s own genuine, physical distress, sighing with breaking loins before the people’s eyes, models how prophetic ministry required embodying rather than merely announcing the coming devastation’s genuine emotional weight.
