Ezekiel describes God crying with a loud voice, saying, “Cause them that have charge over the city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand,” and behold, six men came from the way of the higher gate, every man with his slaughter weapon in his hand, and one man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s “inkhorn,” “qeset” in Hebrew, by his side, and they went in, and stood beside the brasen altar. Ezekiel describes the Lord instructing the man clothed with linen, to go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry for all the abominations that are done in the midst of it, then instructing the others to go after him through the city, and smite, letting their eye not spare, neither having pity, slaying utterly old and young, both maids and little children, and women, but not to come near any man upon whom is the mark, beginning at His sanctuary, so they begin at the ancient men who were before the house. Ezekiel, being left alone, falls upon his face, and cries out, “Ah Lord GOD! wilt thou destroy all the residue of Israel in thy pouring out of thy fury upon Jerusalem?” and God responds that the iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness, since they say the Lord has forsaken the earth, and the Lord sees not, therefore His eye shall not spare, neither will He have pity, but He will recompense their way upon their head, closing with the man clothed with linen returning word that he has done as He commanded him, this remarkable vision demonstrating that even amid such comprehensive, devastating judgment, God carefully, individually distinguishes and protects those who genuinely grieve over sin.
This vision’s careful marking of those who genuinely sigh and cry over the city’s abominations, protected while judgment falls upon everyone else, reveals that God distinguishes precisely between complicit indifference and genuine, grieved distress even amid comprehensive, sweeping judgment. Ezekiel’s own desperate intercession, crying out on behalf of any remaining residue, shows prophetic ministry involved genuine emotional investment rather than detached, clinical observation of even necessary judgment.
