Ezekiel describes how in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as he sat in his house, and the elders of Judah sat before him, the hand of the Lord God fell upon him there, and he saw a likeness as the appearance of fire, and He put forth the form of a hand, and took him by a lock of his head, and the spirit lifted him up between the earth and the heaven, and brought him in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the gate that looks toward the north, where was the seat of the “image,” “cemel” in Hebrew, of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy. Ezekiel is shown a hole in the wall, and told to dig, and behold a door, so he digs, and behold a door, and He says to him, go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here, so he goes in and sees, and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon the wall round about, with seventy elders of the house of Israel standing before them, each man with his censer in his hand, a thick cloud of incense going up. Ezekiel is shown yet greater abominations, women weeping for Tammuz at the door of the north gate of the Lord’s house, and then about twenty-five men, with their backs toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east, worshiping the sun toward the east, God asking whether it is a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here, since they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to provoke Him to anger, closing with God’s declaration that He also will deal in fury, His eye shall not spare, neither will He have pity, and though they cry in His ears with a loud voice, yet He will not hear them, this shocking vision of idolatry occurring within the very temple itself demonstrating just how far corruption had penetrated into Israel’s most sacred, central place of worship.
This shocking vision’s escalating series of abominations, each worse than the last, culminating in sun worship performed with backs deliberately turned toward the Lord’s own temple, illustrates how corruption can progressively worsen when left unaddressed, each compromise paving the way toward even greater unfaithfulness. Its location within the temple itself, rather than some distant, separate place, reveals that corruption had penetrated even Israel’s most sacred, central institution rather than remaining safely confined elsewhere.
