Ezekiel delivers God’s declaration to the land of Israel, “An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land. Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways,” describing how “morning,” “boqer” in Hebrew, is come to them, the day of trouble being near, and not the sounding again of the mountains.
Ezekiel describes how the time is come, the day draws near, urging that he who buys not rejoice, nor he who sells mourn, for wrath is upon all the multitude, since the seller shall not return to that which is sold, though they were yet alive, for the vision is touching the whole multitude, describing how the sword is without, and the pestilence and famine within, he who is in the field dying with the sword, and he who is in the city, famine and pestilence devouring him.
Ezekiel describes how their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord, they shall not satisfy their souls, nor fill their bowels, since it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity, describing how they shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed, their silver and their gold not being able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord, closing with a description of the land being full of bloody crimes, and the city full of violence, so that they shall seek peace, and there shall be none, since the Lord will judge them according to their own way, and according to their own deserts, and they shall know that He is the Lord.
This chapter’s repeated, urgent declaration, an end has come, the end has come, communicates judgment’s genuine, decisive finality with rhythmic, forceful poetic emphasis rather than merely stating it once and moving on. Its sobering observation that silver and gold would prove entirely unable to deliver them exposes the ultimate powerlessness of material wealth to provide genuine security when God’s own judgment finally, actually arrives.
