Jeremiah laments, “How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street,” describing the precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, being esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the “potter,” “yotser” in Hebrew, describing how even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones, but the daughter of his people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. Jeremiah describes the tongue of the sucking child cleaving to the roof of its mouth for thirst, the young children asking bread, but no man breaking it to them, those who ate delicacies being desolate in the streets, those who were brought up in scarlet embracing dunghills, describing the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of his people being greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her, describing the horrifying reality that the hands of pitiful women have boiled their own children, they were their food in the destruction of the daughter of his people. Jeremiah describes their own persecutors being swifter than the eagles of the heaven, they pursued them upon the mountains, they laid wait for them in the wilderness, the breath of their nostrils, the anointed of the Lord, being taken in their pits, of whom they said, under his shadow they shall live among the heathen, describing the daughter of Edom rejoicing and being glad, but warning the cup shall also pass through to her, she shall be drunken, and shall make herself naked, closing with a small note of hope, the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of Zion being accomplished, He will no more carry her away into captivity, but He will visit the iniquity of the daughter of Edom, He will discover her sins.
This chapter’s horrifying description of mothers boiling their own children during the siege’s extreme famine refuses to sanitize war’s genuine, devastating human cost, forcing readers to confront suffering’s real, unimaginable depths rather than abstract, comfortable distance. Its closing observation that Zion’s punishment has been accomplished, while Edom’s still awaits, offers a small but genuine note of hope that even severe judgment eventually reaches its appointed, complete end.
