Jeremiah describes himself as the man who has seen affliction by the rod of His wrath, He has led him, and brought him into darkness, but not into light, surely against him He is turned, He turns His hand against him all the day, describing his flesh and his skin made old, his bones broken, comparing himself to one besieged and compassed with “gall,” “rosh” in Hebrew, and travail, made to dwell in darkness, as those who have been long dead. Jeremiah, in the midst of such genuine despair, discovers a remarkable turning point, “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness,” declaring the Lord is his portion, therefore he will hope in Him, the Lord being good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him, it being good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
Jeremiah describes it as good for a man that he bears the yoke in his youth, urging him to sit alone and keep silence, since he has borne it upon him, to put his mouth in the dust, if there may be hope, describing how the Lord will not cast off forever, but though He causes grief, yet He will have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies, for He does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men, closing this chapter’s central section with a call to search and try their ways, and turn again to the Lord, lifting up their heart with their hands to God in the heavens, since they have transgressed and rebelled, and He has not pardoned, this remarkable chapter’s central turning point offering genuine hope discovered even from within the very depths of profound suffering.
This chapter’s remarkable turning point, discovering hope precisely in the midst of profound despair through remembering God’s mercies are new every morning, models genuine faith that finds real ground for hope not by denying suffering but by deliberately recalling God’s proven, consistent faithfulness.
