Jeremiah continues the word against Babylon, describing raising up against her a destroying wind, sending to Babylon fanners who shall fan her, and empty her land, urging his people to remove out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul, since this is the time of the Lord’s “vengeance,” “naqam” in Hebrew, He will render to her a recompense, describing Babylon as a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunk, but suddenly Babylon has fallen and is destroyed.
Jeremiah describes God’s summons against Babylon, calling together the archers against her, all who bend the bow, camping against her round about, letting none thereof escape, recompensing her according to her work, according to all that she has done, doing to her, describing how a sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction, since the Lord has spoiled Babylon, and destroyed out of her the great voice, and their waves roar like great waters, a noise of their voice is uttered, since the spoiler has come upon Babylon.
Jeremiah describes commanding this word to be delivered even in Babylon itself by Seraiah, who went with Zedekiah king of Judah into Babylon, instructing him that when he comes to Babylon, he shall read all these words, and say, “O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off,” and when he has finished reading this book, binding a stone to it, casting it into the midst of the Euphrates, saying, “Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary,” this dramatic, symbolic act of sinking the book into the river providing a fittingly vivid, memorable conclusion to this extensive, two-chapter oracle against the mighty Babylonian empire.
