Jeremiah delivers the word concerning the Ammonites, asking whether Israel has no sons, whether he has no heir, why then does their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in its cities, describing coming judgment, an alarm of war being heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites, it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with “fire,” “esh” in Hebrew, then Israel shall be heir to those who were his heirs, yet promising afterward He will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon. Jeremiah delivers the word concerning Edom, asking whether wisdom is no more in Teman, whether counsel has perished from the prudent, describing how He will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time He will visit him, describing how if grapegatherers came to him, would they not leave some gleaning grapes, if thieves by night, they would destroy till they had enough, but He has made Esau bare, and uncovered his secret places, warning that as He overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbor cities, no man shall abide there, describing Damascus also, waxing feeble, turning herself to flee, fear having seized on her. Jeremiah delivers the word concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, urging them to arise, go up to Kedar, and spoil the men of the east, describing their tents and their flocks being taken away, and their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels, closing with the word concerning Elam, breaking the bow of Elam, the chief of their might, bringing the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and scattering them toward all those winds, yet also promising that in the latter days He will bring again the captivity of Elam, this extensive collection of oracles demonstrating that God’s sovereignty and moral accountability genuinely extended across every surrounding nation, not merely Judah alone.
