Jeremiah delivers the word of the Lord against the Gentiles, concerning Egypt, against the army of Pharaohnecho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon smote, urging them to order the buckler and shield, and draw near to “battle,” “milchamah” in Hebrew, harnessing the horses, and mounting the horsemen, standing forth with their helmets, furbishing the spears, putting on the brigandines.
Jeremiah asks why he has seen them dismayed and turned away back, their mighty ones being beaten down, and fleeing apace, without looking back, since fear was round about, describing how the swift could not flee away, nor the mighty man escape, they stumbled, and fell toward the north by the river Euphrates, asking who is this that comes up as a flood, whose waters are moved as the rivers, Egypt rising up like a flood, and its waters being moved like the rivers, saying it will go up, and cover the earth, destroying the city and its inhabitants.
Jeremiah describes a further word concerning Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon coming to smite the land of Egypt, urging the daughter dwelling in Egypt to furnish herself to go into captivity, since Noph shall be waste and desolate without inhabitant, describing Egypt as a very fair heifer, but destruction comes, it comes out of the north, her hired men are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks, for they also are turned back, and are fled away together, they did not stand, closing with a beautiful promise to Jacob His servant, urging him not to fear, for God is with him, since He will make a full end of all the nations to which He has driven him, but He will not make a full end of Jacob, but correct him in measure, and not leave him altogether unpunished.
