The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Falsely” it comes from the Hebrew Word “sheqer” which means “falsehood, lie.”

Jeremiah records how when he finishes speaking to all the people all the words of the Lord their God, Azariah, Johanan, and all the proud men respond, telling Jeremiah he speaks “falsely,” “sheqer” in Hebrew, since the Lord their God has not sent him to say they should not go into Egypt to sojourn there, but Baruch the son of Neriah sets him against them, to deliver them into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put them to death, or carry them captive into Babylon. Jeremiah describes how Johanan, all the captains of the forces, and all the people, do not obey the voice of the Lord, to dwell in the land of Judah, but instead take all the remnant of Judah, who had returned from all nations where they had been driven, to sojourn in the land of Judah, the men, women, children, the king’s daughters, and every person Nebuzaradan had left with Gedaliah, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah, and they come into the land of Egypt, for they do not obey the voice of the Lord, and they come even to Tahpanhes. Jeremiah records the word of the Lord coming to him in Tahpanhes, instructing him to take great stones in his hand, and hide them in the clay in the brickkiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, telling them that behold, He will send and take Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, His servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that he has hidden, and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them, coming and smiting the land of Egypt, closing with the observation that he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd puts on his garment, and he shall go forth from there in peace, and shall break also the images of Bethshemesh in the land of Egypt, and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire.
The remnant’s forced removal of Jeremiah to Egypt against both his own counsel and his own personal wishes shows the tragic irony of a community claiming to seek God’s guidance while ultimately overriding it once that guidance proved genuinely unwelcome. This chapter’s dramatic sign, burying stones that would mark Nebuchadnezzar’s future throne even in supposedly safe Egypt, demonstrates that no location, however seemingly secure, could ultimately escape God’s determined, sovereign purposes.
