Jeremiah records the word that came to him in the days of Jehoiakim, instructing him to go to the house of the Rechabites, and speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink, so he takes Jaazaniah and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites, setting before them pots full of wine, and cups, and saying, “Drink ye “wine,” “yayin” in Hebrew.
Jeremiah records their response, that they will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab their father commanded them, saying they shall drink no wine, neither they, nor their sons forever, neither shall they build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any, but all their days they shall dwell in tents, that they may live many days in the land where they are strangers, describing how they have obeyed the voice of Jonadab their father in all that he has charged them, drinking no wine all their days, they, their wives, their sons, nor their daughters.
Jeremiah records God’s pointed comparison, that the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them, but this people has not hearkened to Him, though He has spoken to them, rising early and speaking, but they have not listened, urging Jeremiah to tell the men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem that because the sons of Jonadab have performed the commandment of their father, but this people has not hearkened to Him, He will bring upon Judah and Jerusalem all the evil He has pronounced against them, closing with a promise that Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before Him forever, this striking contrast between a family’s simple, faithful obedience and Judah’s sophisticated, persistent rebellion delivering a genuinely humbling rebuke.
The Rechabites’ simple, generations-long faithfulness to their ancestor’s specific instruction, refusing even a single cup of wine despite direct temptation, stands in stark, humbling contrast to Judah’s persistent unfaithfulness despite God’s far more significant, repeated appeals. This chapter’s comparison suggests that consistency and genuine follow-through often matter more to God than the relative sophistication or theological significance of what is actually being obeyed.
