Jeremiah receives fresh promises of healing and restoration while still confined in prison. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Jeremiah 33.
Jeremiah records the word of the Lord coming to him a second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, declaring, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not,” describing how He will bring health and “cure,” “marpe” in Hebrew, and He will cure them, and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth.
Jeremiah describes how God will cause the captivity of Judah and Israel to return, and will build them as at the first, cleansing them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against Him, and He will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against Him, promising that this city shall be to Him a name of joy, a praise and an honor before all the nations of the earth, describing how in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, there shall be heard again the voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride.
Jeremiah delivers a renewed messianic promise, “In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land,” describing how David shall never lack a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel, nor shall the priests the Levites lack a man before Him to offer burnt offerings, closing with God’s comparison to His covenant with day and night, since as they cannot be broken, so His covenant with David His servant shall not be broken, and He will multiply the seed of David His servant, and the Levites who minister to Him, as the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured.
God’s invitation, call to Me and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things you do not know, offers genuine encouragement toward bold, expectant prayer even amid Jeremiah’s own difficult imprisonment. This chapter’s repeated messianic promise, echoing chapter thirty-one’s similar language, reinforces how central and important this coming righteous Branch remained throughout Jeremiah’s entire extended prophetic ministry.
