Jeremiah records the word that came to him in the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, instructing him to stand in the court of the Lord’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the Lord’s house, all the words He commands him, diminishing not a “word,” “davar” in Hebrew, perhaps they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that He may repent of the evil which He purposes to do to them because of the evil of their doings.
Jeremiah describes delivering God’s warning that if they will not hearken to Him, to walk in His law, to hearken to the words of His servants the prophets, then He will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth, causing the priests and the prophets and all the people to hear him in the house of the Lord, and when Jeremiah finishes speaking, they seize him, declaring he must die, since he has prophesied against this city.
Jeremiah is brought before the princes of Judah, who sit in judgment, the priests and prophets speaking against him, urging his death, but Jeremiah responds boldly that the Lord sent him to prophesy against this house and city all the words they have heard, urging them to amend their ways and doings, and obey the voice of the Lord, and He will repent of the evil He has pronounced, but as for himself, he is in their hand, to do with him as seems good and right to them, only urging them to know they shall bring innocent blood upon themselves, since the Lord has truly sent him, certain of the elders and Ahikam the son of Shaphan interceding, citing Micah’s similar prophecy that Hezekiah did not put to death, so Jeremiah is delivered from being put to death.
Jeremiah’s calm, courageous defense before an angry crowd demanding his execution, standing firm in his message while placing his life entirely in their hands, models genuine faithfulness that continues honest proclamation even facing real, immediate mortal danger. The wise intervention of elders citing historical precedent shows how thoughtful, informed counsel can sometimes rescue genuine truth-tellers from mob justice driven by momentary outrage rather than careful, deliberate judgment.
