Jeremiah records the word that came to him in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, describing how for twenty-three years he has spoken to them, rising early and speaking, but they have not hearkened, describing how the Lord has sent to them all His servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, but they have not hearkened, nor inclined their ear to hear, though they turned every one from his evil “way,” “derek” in Hebrew, and from the evil of their doings, and dwelt in the land the Lord gave to them and their fathers forever and ever.
Jeremiah delivers a specific, dated prophecy, since they have not heard His words, He will send and take all the families of the north, and Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, His servant, and bring them against this land, making it a desolation, a hissing, and perpetual desolations, and this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon “seventy years,” and it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, He will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, for their iniquity, making it perpetual desolations.
Jeremiah describes taking the wine cup of God’s fury at His hand, and causing all the nations to drink it, to whom He sends him, Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, and Egypt, and all the mingled people, and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people, describing a comprehensive list of nations who shall drink this cup, closing with a striking image, God roaring from on high, and uttering His voice from His holy habitation, mightily roaring upon His habitation, giving a shout, as they who tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth, since a noise shall come even to the ends of the earth, for the Lord has a controversy with the nations, He will plead with all flesh, and give those who are wicked to the sword.
