Jeremiah is instructed to get a potter’s earthen “bottle,” “baqbuq” in Hebrew, and take some of the elders of the people, and of the priests, going forth to the valley of the son of Hinnom, proclaiming there the words God shall tell him, describing how the people have forsaken Him, and estranged this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents, building the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which He did not command.
Jeremiah delivers God’s judgment, that He will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and He will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, their carcasses being meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth, and He will make this city desolate, and a hissing, describing how He will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and daughters in the siege, and in the straitness with which their enemies shall distress them.
Jeremiah then breaks the bottle in the sight of the men who went with him, declaring, “Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again,” instructing that they shall bury in Tophet, till there is no place to bury, this act performed publicly and dramatically to communicate the irreversible, complete nature of the coming judgment, Jeremiah then coming from Tophet, where the Lord sent him to prophesy, standing in the court of the Lord’s house, and delivering the same devastating message to all the people.
Jeremiah’s dramatic act, publicly shattering an earthen bottle before witnesses, communicates judgment’s genuine finality far more powerfully than mere verbal description could achieve, a broken pot being permanently, irreversibly ruined. This chapter’s specific mention of child sacrifice to Baal reveals the genuine depth of moral corruption that had provoked such severe, decisive judgment, going far beyond mere ritual infidelity toward genuinely horrific practice.
