Jeremiah is instructed not to take a wife, neither to have sons or daughters in this place, since thus says the Lord concerning the sons and daughters born in this place, and concerning their mothers who bore them, and their fathers who begot them, they shall die of grievous “deaths,” “mavet” in Hebrew, they shall not be lamented, neither shall they be buried, but shall be as dung upon the face of the earth.
Jeremiah is instructed not to enter into the house of mourning, nor go to lament nor bemoan them, for God has taken away His peace from this people, even lovingkindness and mercies, warning that both the great and the small shall die in this land, they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them, neither shall men tear themselves for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead, neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or their mother.
Jeremiah is also instructed not to enter the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink, since thus says the Lord of hosts, He will cause to cease out of this place, in their eyes and in their days, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, describing how when the people ask why the Lord has pronounced all this great evil against them, Jeremiah shall answer that their fathers have forsaken Him, and walked after other gods, closing with a promise that God will yet cause them to know His hand and His might, and they shall know that His name is the LORD, and that after this judgment, He will send for many fishers and hunters to gather His scattered people, and eventually the Gentiles shall come to Him from the ends of the earth, acknowledging that their fathers have inherited nothing but lies.
Jeremiah’s extraordinary personal sacrifice, forbidden even from marriage and family for the sake of embodying his prophetic message, demonstrates genuine, costly obedience that shaped his entire personal life around his difficult calling. This chapter’s prohibition against normal mourning and celebration alike illustrates judgment’s genuine severity, disrupting even life’s most basic, universal human rhythms of grief and joy.
