The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Marred” it comes from the Hebrew Word “shachath” which means “to be marred, corrupted.”

Jeremiah is instructed to get a linen girdle, and put it upon his loins, and not put it in water, which he does, then instructed to take the girdle he had gotten, and go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock, which he does, then after many days he is told to go again to the Euphrates, and take the girdle from there, which he had hid, and behold, the girdle was “marred,” “shachath” in Hebrew, it was profitable for nothing. Jeremiah records God’s explanation, that after this manner He will mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem, this evil people, who refuse to hear His words, who walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing, for as the girdle cleaves to the loins of a man, so He caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cleave to Him, that they might be to Him for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory, but they would not hear. Jeremiah urges them to give glory to the Lord their God, before He causes darkness, and before their feet stumble upon the dark mountains, warning that if they will not hear it, his soul shall weep in secret places for their pride, his eye shall weep, and run down with tears, because the Lord’s flock is carried away captive, urging the king and queen to humble themselves, since their crown of glory shall come down, asking Jerusalem whether she can change her skin, or the leopard his spots, since neither can they do good, who are accustomed to do evil, closing with God’s promise to scatter them as stubble that passes away by the wind of the wilderness, this being their lot, the portion of their measures from Him, because they have forgotten Him, and trusted in falsehood.
Jeremiah’s symbolic act, ruining a good linen girdle by burying it near the Euphrates, uses vivid, tangible object lessons to communicate abstract spiritual truth about Judah’s coming corruption in a way that mere verbal explanation might not achieve as memorably. His genuine tears, weeping in secret places for their pride, reveal that pronouncing judgment never required abandoning authentic personal grief over the people’s impending suffering.
